The distance from Malaga airport to Estepona is approximately 80 kilometres. The options for covering it range from convenient and expensive to cheap and slow. Here is a clear breakdown with honest advice on each.
Private transfer
The most comfortable option. A driver meets you at arrivals and takes you directly to your accommodation. Journey time is approximately 55 to 70 minutes depending on traffic. Cost ranges from 90 to 130 euros for a standard car, slightly more for larger vehicles.
We arrange transfers for our guests through trusted local partners. The driver is confirmed before arrival, and the service includes flight tracking so delays are handled automatically. For families with luggage or anyone arriving after a long flight, this is the option we recommend most often.
Hire car
The most flexible option, particularly if you plan to explore the area during your stay. Car hire at Malaga airport is competitive, with daily rates from 25 to 50 euros depending on the season and vehicle type.
The drive to Estepona is straightforward. Take the AP-7 motorway westbound. The toll road (AP-7) is faster and less congested than the free coastal road (A-7). Tolls are approximately 8 euros each way. Most properties in Estepona have parking available, but confirm with your host before arrival.
Bus
The Avanza bus company runs a direct service from Malaga airport to Estepona bus station. Departures are roughly every one to two hours, and the journey takes approximately 90 minutes to two hours depending on stops. Tickets cost around 13 to 16 euros per person.
The bus is a reasonable option for solo travellers or couples without heavy luggage. The Estepona bus station is in the town centre, from where a short taxi ride will get you to most accommodation. It is not ideal for families or anyone arriving late at night when services are reduced.
Taxi
A metered taxi from the airport will cost approximately 120 to 160 euros to Estepona. The advantage is immediate availability without pre-booking. The disadvantage is the cost and the fact that you may need to explain your destination to a driver unfamiliar with the specific address.
Airport taxis are regulated and metered, so the price is transparent. However, for the same money or less, a pre-booked private transfer provides a better experience.
Train
There is no direct train from Malaga airport to Estepona. The Cercanias commuter train runs from the airport to Malaga city centre, but from there you would need to take a bus to Estepona. This makes the train an impractical option for most visitors.
There are long-term plans for a coastal rail connection extending westward, but as of 2026, this remains a planning-stage project.
